What Is World Cancer Day?

FEBRUARY 05, 2020

By 2030, The Max Foundation predicts there will be 23.6 million cancer cases globally. Luckily, organizations like the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) have supported this cause by creating World Cancer Day. This day is used to raise awareness, improve education and catalyze action against cancer.

A GLOBAL UNITING INITIATIVE

World Cancer Day was created in 2000 at the World Summit Against Cancer for the New Millennium. It was created to ultimately reduce the global impact of cancer by uniting the world under this single cause. Each year, the event has a theme. This year’s World Cancer Day’s theme is, “I Am and I Will,” highlighting supporters’ willingness and commitment to act against the global epidemic of cancer.

On this day, you can find many supporters out in their communities raising money for the cause. Part of this initiative is to reach one goal: to reduce the number of premature deaths from cancer and noncommunicable diseases by one third by 2030. But for now, each February 4 is a testament to that fight.

THE IMPACT OF WORLD CANCER DAY

Mainly, World Cancer Day and those rallying behind it believe that “access to life-saving cancer diagnosis, treatment and care should be equal for all – no matter where you live, what your income, your ethnicity or gender.”

Since 2004, World Cancer Day has truly made a difference globally. They’ve published over 15,000 press articles across 154 countries and orchestrated almost 1,000 events across 127 countries. This attention led to the strong support of 62 government leaders.

MORE ON UICC

UICC is the largest and oldest international cancer organization that has continually pioneered convening, capacity building and advocacy initiatives for cancer communities. Thus, they distill their efforts down to one priority: reducing the global cancer burden, promoting greater equity, and integrating cancer control into the world health agenda.

PRIMO & WORLD CANCER DAY

At Primo® Water, we are committed to inspiring healthier lives through better water. But our efforts don’t just stop at H2O. They run the gamut of all healthy habits, including diet, exercise and mental health. That’s why we support World Cancer Day along with thousands of others, because any organization that advocates for healthier humans matters to us.

Many communities around the globe have limited or no access to better, safer water. And the water they do have might be tainted with cancer-causing toxins. Even in developed countries like the United States, we still struggle to rule our tap water as completely safe to drink.

That’s where Primo steps in. Our water undergoes a 5-step Reverse Osmosis (RO) purification process that gets rid of potentially cancer-causing chemicals that could be lurking. This is how we believe we can contribute to the efforts that World Cancer Day have so obviously streamlined.
