Staying Ahead of the Thanksgiving Hangover
Is everybody excited for Turkey Day!? How can you not be? It’s the meal everyone looks forward to all year long. The turkey. The stuffing. The cranberry sauce. The sweet potatoes with those delicious little marshmallows.
With so much buildup and anticipation, it’s hard not to overindulge at the Thanksgiving table… in food and drink. In
fact, in some years, it probably wouldn’t be inappropriate to call the day after Hangover Friday instead of Black Friday. But, to live well, you’ve got to eat and drink well. And, besides, the times call for a little celebration.
So, what can you do the survive and adapt to Hangover Friday? Here are a few timely suggestions.
Plan Ahead to Stay Ahead of the Thanksgiving Hangover
Drink Water
Keeping your body properly hydrated before the food is served and adult beverages start flowing is a great start. That way, you’re building from a solid foundation. But it’s also important to replenish your body’s supply, especially because the alcohol tends to make your body misjudge how much water it thinks it has. A glass of water before you go to sleep or at your night table is also a good idea. And, of course, you’ll want to pour Primo water in that glass.
Eat Breakfast
Another one of Mom’s rules that you should always follow. But, to really help your body process and expel the holiday excesses, consider adding a surprising breakfast ingredient — asparagus. The amino acids and minerals in asparagus can help alleviate some of your common hangover symptoms and protect your liver cells from toxins. Asparagus is also a natural diuretic, which encourages your body to get rid of toxins faster.
Get Up, Move Around
You may feel like loafing around, especially after you eat that nice breakfast. But, laying around for too long may not be the best idea. Being upright, or, god forbid, getting up and moving around is more effective in reducing intestinal gas retention.
Eat More Turkey
Hair of the dog, right? Just so we’re clear, we’re talking about more turkey, not liquor. Research has shown that, thanks to its abundance of Vitamin B, turkey can reduce hangover symptoms by as much as 50 percent.
Fruit for Dessert
So, after your nice helping of casseroles, turkey and stuffing, avoid the pie at the desert table this go-round. Opt instead for some fruit. Fruit contains a good bit of water and is another way to supply your body with the hydration it needs.

Sip on Some Tea
Another good way to settle a still unsteady tummy is to drink some tea. There are a number of blends and tea recipes out there. A few are specifically good for hangover symptoms. Ginger tea is a great way to battle nausea. Turmeric tea is enjoying some popularity thanks to its reported anti-inflammatory properties. Peppermint and chamomile teas are also delicious and helpful.
